My CPCC Courses: Your Brain Will Explode!

Website Courses @CPCC in #Charlotte, NCCan you learn 25 years of marketing & web development in a single semester? Hell no! But you can benefit from someone who has learned it in 25 years. I teach various web design & development courses at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in Charlotte, NC. The problem with these courses is that students are impatient to learn everything to get the most for the educational dollars and the school wants them to get as much as they can, so a diverse number of subjects are jammed into a single semester. The problem is: you can’t be an Adobe Photoshop expert, a master HTML coder, a CSS (cascading Style Sheet) monster,  and marketing guru in a single semester. It can take a lifetime. I know. What you can do is take a fast track by learning from someone who has been down that path.

More Than Joe Nephew…

One of the goals in these classes is to be more competitive in the Web Development job market. That means you have to beat the manager’s nephew, “Joe”, at skills and knowledge. This is one of the things I do to add extra value to these classes: provide you tips that Joe Nephew may not know due to his lack of experience. Sure, he may have a computer and know how to code HTML, but does he know…

  • Ease of Navigation tricks,
  • how colors evoke emotional responses from visitors, or
  • how to best make your site more Search Engine Friendly?
  • Probably not.

Those plus hundreds of other little tidbits are what I include in my classes to make you more competitive with “Joe Nephew” in the web design job market.

Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NCCranium Overload!

One thing about these classes is that because the curriculum is so intense, you will walk away from these courses thinking your brain is going to explode from all the stuff I have tried to cram in there. It won’t. In all these years, I have never had anyone’s head actually detonate. You may not remember everything that gets thrown at you (depends on how well you take notes!) but you will get as much as I can possibly feed you in a single semester. I want you to…

  1. Get the specific technology & design needs you need to exceed your goals. When you first come to class, you will be required to write down your expectations of what you want to learn and later we will review that to make sure you are getting what you need from the class.
  2. Get more than your hard earned money’s worth out of the class.
  3. Be more competitive in the job market when you leave the class.
  4. Have an advantage over the Joe Nephews of the world when developing a web site.

Be Ready to Work, Learn & Have Fun!

(Well, work and learn anyway.) There are some pretty high expectations set for you when taking one of my classes. There will be a LOT of assigned reading, (depending on the class, there will also be) home lab work, in-class lab work (hands on coding, image editing, CSS coding, and anything else you need to learn).  There is a lot to learn in the world of web design and if you don’t learn so much you think your head will explode, it’s because you didn’t put in the effort or didn’t show up. At times, you will think I am a slave driver.  They outlawed that, but there is a fine line between educating and abusing students.
