Teaching: Above and Beyond

Paul MetheneyCollege teachers are required to teach from the approved text book and teach the skills required by the course. Many will also use the PowerPoints that the book publishers provide with the text books. In this case, the instructor, Paul Metheney, who teaches at CPCC, exceeded the typical expectations for what a college instructor normally prides his students. He does all this extra work in an order for them to absorb the skills and terminology that will make them more competitive in today’s job market.

Above and Beyond

When reviewing what extra work went into the Web Design/Internet Marketing class this semester, this is what I came up with…

  • Posted all materials to Blackboard system for easy access in class and at home for students
  • Created Web site server directories for each student so they can edit and work on real web sites
  • HTML CourseInstalled WordPress blogs on their web sites so students can customize real blogs (and tested)
  • Developed quizzes and posts them to Blackboard for each week to allow students to analyze how much information they have retained
    • Did oral Previews in class before quizzes and give answers to quizzes
    • Typed up study guide questions so students have for quiz
  • Used real world anecdotes to bring subject matter into perspective and bring it to life
  • Used analogies to make subjects more understandable
    • Encourage students to develop their own analogies – i.e. April: “Server Side Includes are like Iron Man’s armor – it flies into place to build the suit before it flies into action.”
  • Scanned additional materials and posted to Blackboard
  • Developed lesson plans and assignments and post on Blackboard
  • Took students on a real world (field trip) meeting with prospective client for initial project interview
  • Arranged Creative Group speaker to come to class and discuss career placement with students & administrators
  • Found, attended and invited students to a Meet-up discussion panel on starting a career in UX
  • Provided pre-developed materials so students have content and items to work on instead of having to spend time developing new raw materials themselves
    • Web Site content
    • Photos for sample web site
    • Blog article content
    • Logos so students don’t have to design sample Logo art
    • Snippets of JavaScript code to reduce SPAM
    • Social media icons
  • Provided real world tools to speed student understanding and usage of concepts
    • Return On Investment calculator for Pay Per Click
    • Files with links of keyword research tools
    • Files with links of Web Analysis tools
    • Books to read outside of class for additional education
    • Generic org chart sitemap samples
    • Renamer for quickly renaming  files
    • Image Resizer for quickly optimizing images
  • Arranged for, and creates, free email campaign system accounts so students can get experience editing and customizing email broadcast systems
  • Spent time after class working with students with specific issues.
  • Also taught “Joe Nephew” items that self-taught career competitors may not know, to make us more competitive in the job market
